Regional Inclusive Services Program Makes Inclusive Education Possible
“We’re still people," says tenth grader Sophia Dirks. "We still can do things by ourselves and live independently, but we need help learning to get there.” Sophia lost her vision at age 9 and has received specialized vision services through Regional Inclusive Services since that time.

Sherry Ely to Continue in 2023-24 as Interim Chief Financial Officer
Sherry Ely will continue as interim chief financial officer for the 2023-24 school year. She has been serving in the interim role since August of 2022. “We are so fortunate to have Sherry staying on with us as our interim chief financial officer for another year,” says Superintendent Dan Goldman.

Working with the Latine Community? Attend Free Sessions to Help Support Mental Health and Well-Being
From now through July, Raíces de Bienestar, a local nonprofit, and Trauma Informed Oregon, a statewide collaborative that supports wellness and resilience, are offering free sessions in Spanish for educators and community partners who work with the Latine community in Oregon.

NFL Patriots Player Kendrick Bourne Visits Student BIPOC Affinity Group
Friday was an exciting day for the Student BIPOC Affinity Group at Cascade, Pacific and Columbia academies. The student-led Black, Indigenous and People of Color group welcomed Kendrick Bourne and his wife, Vanessa. Kendrick plays football for the New England Patriots.

Northwest Regional Education Service District is seeking candidates for two zone (elected) and two appointed positions. The open zoned positions are Zones 2 and 5 and the open appointed positions are in Business and Social Services.

In addition to the special education, outdoor school or technology services that education service districts are known for, our agency also provides business services to school districts. During the 2021-22 school year, we supported 11 districts.

Northwest Promise is Now Career and College Readiness
Northwest Regional Education Service District launched a new career and college readiness program this past fall. Northwest Promise, the dual credit program we offered from 2014-2022, is now part of Willamette Promise. Services include career services for high school students and educator training.

Pizza, Salad and Friends — Just Another Friday with Our Vision Program
As he lowered the oven door, the heat spread across his face. The smell of baked pizza wafted out. Riley slowly reached in, his hands covered in thick black and red gloves. He reached for the pan and slowly raised it out of the oven and onto the stove.

Megan McCarter Named Chief Academic Officer
Megan McCarter, Ed.D., has been named the permanent chief academic officer of NWRESD effective July 1. “During her 1.5-year tenure with us, Megan has impressed me with her passion for equity and laser-like focus on student success,” says Superintendent Dan Goldman.

Resources for Families, Educators Following the Events in Tennessee
Unfortunately and yet again I’m writing to share my grief — and my concern for our students — amid the violent and tragic killing of Tyre Nichols. By now, many of our students will have seen the unconscionable, disgusting and frankly scary video of another black man being killed by police.
