We're excited to provide support for our districts through a regional mentorship program. This program will be in partnership with the New Teacher Center, our Instructional Coaching Network, and our Northwest Regional Educator Network. Mentoring is vital to providing new educators with the support needed to be successful in their journey and to help to retain these educators.

What is the time commitment for district mentors?
The New Teacher Center (NTC) asks that mentors spend at least 180 minutes (3 hours) a month with their mentees for mentoring to be impactful and make positive growth for their mentees. The Oregon Education Advancement Council (EAC) and ODE ask that mentors spend 75 hours a year for mentorship to be impactful. NWRESD will provide mentors if district mentors cannot keep their time commitment. The NWRESD Regional Mentoring Program is committed to giving each new teacher as much time as they need to be successful in their skills and instructional practices. The NWRESD Team will check in on mentors regularly and coach them as needed.

Will NWRESD pay for substitute time?
Yes! NWRESD will reimburse participating school districts for their substitute costs associated with this program for both in-person and virtual events.
Is there a stipend for mentors?
Yes! Every mentor will receive a stipend for their work. The amount of the stipend is to be determined.
Will events be recorded?
All virtual sessions will be recorded and made available to participants; in-person events and training sessions will not be recorded. Our first in-person event on August 14th is for site administrators and program leads only.

Oregon Mentoring Program Policy

In 2023, Senate Bill 283 allocated $8 million to the Oregon Department of Education to support mentoring programs for educators for the 2023-25 biennium. These one-time funds will support formal mentoring programs that follow the requirements outlined in the former Oregon Mentor Program. Resources can only be used to provide eligible beginning teachers and administrators with continued and sustained mentoring from a formal mentor.

NWRESD is working with its component districts to provide supports to existing or new mentor programs. Districts can apply for this one-time funding alone or with NWRESD as a consortium.
