Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a framework that helps school systems use data to make decisions.
It is most commonly used to improve reading instruction (known as Response to Intervention) and behavior instruction (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports - PBIS), but the three-tiered model can be applied to any school initiative. The three-tiered, also known as multi-tired, model takes into account student attendance, social emotional learning and mental health.
The MTSS framework ensures educational programs are consistent and effective. It also seeks to streamline meetings so educators have more time in the classroom. MTSS uses data to sort the level of services and supports students receive.
The level of support at each tier is outlined below:
