As you plan for the upcoming academic year, we wanted to steer your attention to Oregon Virtual Education (ORVED), a virtual education program that caters to the various needs of students across Oregon. COVID-19 has taught us that education has to be reimagined to serve ALL students! ORVED is and could potentially be for your district, taking care of students who need the flexibility and the platform to access education at their own timeline and comfort. The program is self-paced and flexible within the parameters specified by state law.

In partnership with Northwest Regional ESD, ORVED offers Oregon students access to high-quality, standards-based courses through a suite of online course offerings taught by Oregon teachers.

Students have the option to enroll in ORVED courses for enrichment, credit recovery, or flexibility while remaining in their local school district. ORVED is a supplemental program, not a full-time charter school. ORVED offers core courses as well as advanced placement and electives.

I love the autonomy ORVED gave me to follow my passion (horses) and I’m very grateful I found it, as it allowed me to do both in-person and online and still graduate.

For a number of years, Knappa School District has used ORVED to provide course options for high school students. With the small size of our school, ORVED has helped us expand our limited offerings and provide credit recovery.

Students and Families

Important message for students and guardian(s): All students must get approval from their school or district before enrolling in ORVED courses.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is the principle and practice of respect for ideas and works. It means all the work submitted is created by the student and is an original representation of individual learning and thoughts. Outside sources are often necessary on assignments, but must be referenced and cited and never copied.

ORVED has a zero tolerance policy for AI generated work.

We all believe in educating our students to be ethical and responsible citizens of the world.
Teachers, students, learning coaches and parents are encouraged to discuss the appropriate usage of AI both in the classroom and in society.
AI Generated work such as ChatGPT will not be tolerated in ORVED.
As soon as detected, the student will be dropped from the course with a failing grade.
Teachers will use their discretion whether or not to allow students to use Grammarly or other generative AI tools for editing purposes.

Students need:

Access to a phone
Access to a working computer
An internet connection

Students need to know how to:

Assume responsibility for meeting class obligations
Learn by reading and doing assignments independently
Navigate web sites
Organize large projects into manageable tasks
Properly attribute and cite source material
Save files to PDF
Set and meet academic goals
Use a search engine
Use email
Use a word processing tool
Work effectively with minimal supervision
Write emails using professional language and tone

District Staff

There are several ways to take advantage of all that ORVED has to offer.

Students can take core or elective courses with an ORVED teacher for credit back in their home districts.
Qualifying districts will receive courses including instruction at a reduced cost. For more information about getting a small and rural school grant through the Oregon Department of Education email us.
Districts can purchase the use of Genius and FlexPoint courses through ORVED and use their own teachers to grant core and elective credit for kindergarten through 12th grade students.
Teacher-directed credit recovery is available for core content areas.

A district-provided online learning coach is required for discounts. We encourage each district to have a coach or mentor for students taking online courses to improve performance and increase completion rates.

FAQs

Who can enroll in ORVED?

ORVED offers classes for Oregon students in grades 6-12 with a teacher. Oregon school districts can access courses for grades K-5, but will need to supply the teacher. ORVED works with students, families, and districts to ensure that each student receives the options that best suit individual academic needs.
What subjects can a student study online?

Language arts, math, science, social studies, health and physical education are the core classes. ORVED offers a variety of electives and advanced placement courses in every subject.
Does the program provide textbooks and other instructional materials?

In middle school, all of the materials are available online. Although most high school courses operate using material that is entirely online, several do require additional instructional materials. These could be e-texts or accounts supplied by ORVED.
