ORVED offers classes for Oregon students in grades 6-12 with a teacher. Oregon school districts can access courses for grades K-5, but will need to supply the teacher. ORVED works with students, families, and districts to ensure that each student receives the options that best suit individual academic needs.
What subjects can a student study online?
Language arts, math, science, social studies, health and physical education are the core classes. ORVED offers a variety of electives and advanced placement courses in every subject.
Does the program provide textbooks and other instructional materials?
In middle school, all of the materials are available online. Although most high school courses operate using material that is entirely online, several do require additional instructional materials. These could be e-texts or accounts supplied by ORVED.
Can a student work at their own pace?
The program is self-paced and flexible within the parameters specified by state law. Students have up to 18 weeks from the time they enroll to complete a half-credit course. Students may choose to complete a course early.
How much time do students spend on the computer?
Online education is not easier or faster than brick-and-mortar schooling; it is just different. High school students should expect to spend and average of 5-8 hours per class per week online.
Do you provide curriculum for children with unique needs?
Depending on a child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP), we can tailor our curriculum to meet specific needs. Please contact us to discuss a child’s needs. For districts, we strongly encourage the IEP support to take place within a brick-and-mortar school where a special education professional can provide guidance to ORVED teachers about how to properly modify the course to meet the student's IEP requirements.
If a student has an IEP indicating extended time for learning and/or test-taking, can ORVED accommodate?
Yes. However, we’ve found that the majority of students are able to finish courses in fewer than 18 weeks. If you have questions about accommodations, please email registrar@orved.org or call 503-614-1300.
Can you accommodate the accelerated learning needs of a child?
Our program is flexible enough to meet children where they are in any given subject and take them where they want to go. For example, if a student in middle school wants to take a high school math course and take an eighth grade language arts class in the same term, we can provide that flexibility.
How do I enroll a student?
Visit the application page to apply. We enroll students every day of the year (with the exception of winter and spring breaks when our offices are closed).
How will I know when a student's enrollment has been approved?
The school counselor, parent and student will receive an email with enrollment confirmation and login information.
Can students be enrolled in ORVED and another public school simultaneously?
Yes. Students can take classes with ORVED and attend their local public schools. We do advise students to get approval from their local school district before enrolling with ORVED.
Yes. According to state law, ORVED students are required to check in with their teachers at least twice a week.
Do I need to own a computer to attend?
Maybe. It depends on the home district. Districts might provide computers and online access in a computer lab during the school day. Please check with your district. If the student is learning at home or in a district without a computer lab, they will need a computer and reliable, high-speed internet.
As a school district, can we set up our own online school through ORVED?
Absolutely! ORVED offers school districts a simple, effective and easy-to-implement way to have a district-wide online school that uses ORVED teachers and/or ORVED curriculum to meet the needs of your students. For more information, please email helpdesk@orved.org.
