The Board directs the development and approval of a Health, Safety and Emergency Plan. The plan is designed to assure every student a safe, healthy environment in which to learn. The plan will comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations and with Board policy.

A Service Center, or other Northwest Regional Education Service District (NWRESD) facility safety and health committees, will ensure that general safety regulations are reviewed with staff and students as appropriate to assure student safety.

Instruction in courses including, but not be limited to, industrial arts, science, consumer homemaking, art, physical education, health, and safety, which will include and emphasize accident prevention.

Safety instruction will assist students to:

1. Learn how to work, play and exercise safely and how to prevent accidents;

2. Learn proper procedures to reduce the possibility of accidents;

3. Develop habits of good housekeeping, proper storage and handling of materials;

4. Become familiar with personal protective devices and the proper clothing to be worn for safety purposes;

5. Develop skills in the safe use of tools and equipment;

6. Learn how to cooperate with others in the promotion and operation of a safety program in the school and/or other settings;

7. Respond to emergency situations in all settings.

Safety instruction will precede the use of materials and equipment by students in applicable units of work in the courses listed above. Instructors will teach and enforce all safety rules set up for these particular courses. Rules will include, but not be limited to, wearing protective eye and ear attached devices and protective gloves and aprons in appropriate activities.

Students will be asked to sign off upon completion of reading safety policies and materials and upon the completion of safety instruction.

All staff should make an effort to increase their knowledge and understanding of proper steps to be taken in emergency handling of accident victims. Staff should also have knowledge of the physical conditions of their students, including special disabilities and requirements, so they may be prepared to serve special needs and to meet any emergency that may arise.

NWRESD personnel have responsibilities in connection with accidents and illness occurring in school which may be classified as follows:

1. Administering first aid;

2. Notifying the administration and parents;

3. Filing accident reports.

Staff must use sound judgment in handling accident cases. Extreme caution should be exercised even in what appears to be a minor accident. Students who have been injured shall not be released from observation and supervision until such time as the staff is certain there is no risk to the student because of lack of direct supervision or treatment, unless the teacher has been relieved of this responsibility by the administration, parent, or proper medical authority. Students requiring medical attention shall not be sent to receive such treatment without competent accompaniment, unless such treatment is routine and superficial.
