Orig. Code(s): INCA

The Board may support the participation of major political figures in a variety of Northwest Regional Education Service District (NWRESD) events. Such events include, but are not limited to, building dedications, awards assemblies, commencement and curricular activities such as a mock convention.

During a campaign year, a candidate is expected to refrain from using issues/materials related to that campaign.

Political candidates may be allowed to speak to classes or clubs during the school day if, in the judgment of the administration, the presentation is a desirable supplement to the instructional program. If such presentation is permitted, any other candidate who has filed for the same office will, upon request, be allowed equal time.

Each candidate, whether or not the incumbent, will be expected to adhere to the rules and procedures established for community resource persons/controversial speakers.

Prior to appearing, the resource person will be given in writing and will agree to abide by the Board regulations. The teacher responsible for inviting the resource person, or any NWRESD supervisor, has the right and duty to interrupt or suspend the resource person whenever the conduct is judged to be in poor taste or endangers the health and safety of students and staff. Examples of inappropriate conduct are:

  1. Profanity, vulgarity or lewd comments or materials;
  2. Smoking while speaking to or consulting with students;
  3. Encouraging any unlawful behavior on the part of the students;
  4. Any actions that violate any Board policy.
