Our Racial Equity Affinity Group was established in 2018 and hosts monthly meetings throughout the school year for NWRESD staff and our component school district staff who identify as a person of color.
The group, led by staff of color, is dedicated to cultivating connection and validation in a space of White Supremacy Culture. It is a community that provides safety, honor and authenticity of one’s true self, and awareness of shared history and lived experiences.
Themes of monthly meetings include:
- Community care: peer check-ins, group activities and group discussions
- Culture: cultural heritage months, cultural histories and cultural politics
- Current events: Black Lives Matter movement, presidential elections and pandemic/vaccines
- Mental health: self-care, trauma-informed care and wellness activities
- NWRESD updates: Equity Board Policy Committee updates and wellness initiatives
- Racial politics: colorism, racelighting and misogynoir
- Systemic barriers: School-to-prison pipeline, White Supremacy Culture characteristics and redlining
