Parenting in a Digital Age : Internet risks for youth and suicide prevention awareness for parents

  • Date: 03/09/2023 6:00 PM - 7:50 PM

Are you a parent of a teen or pre-teen? Does your child have a smart phone and internet access outside of your supervision? Did you know there are apps your child can download to hide their online activity from your view? Do you confidently know the state of your childā€™s mental health and emotional well-being?

There are many tough questions facing parents today and itā€™s difficult to have all the answers with the ever-changing risks confronting our kids. With screen time on the rise, the reality of your child engaging in dangerous online activity is very real; everything from inappropriate online relationships, sexting scams, to venturing into the dark web- there are many real dangers parents need to be aware of. The social pressures facing our kids in school and online are constant- in a world of social media influencers and cyber bullying, itā€™s never been more important to intentionally check-in on your childā€™s mental health and well-being.

The Clackamas County Sheriffā€™s Office is pleased to share a 90-minute presentation to address some of these big issues and the associated risks. One of our School Resource Officers and Crime Prevention Specialists will discuss current trends and data from crimes connected to youth in our area- sharing what you need to know to stay ahead and prepare your kids to make smart decisions online. Additionally, Clackamas Countyā€™s Suicide Prevention Coordinator will share some risk factors associated with youth suicide, how to have a conversation with someone who is struggling, what resources are available to you and your family for support and how to get involved.

Please join us for this important conversation as we explore what we as parents can do to help our kids navigate to a healthy future.
